Background and Objectives

To date, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) Universal Design research group has hosted two previous symposiums on equity and inclusion - in 2010 and 2013. In each conference, over 120 participants gathered to present Japanese activities focused on using astronomy for equity and inclusion. The first two editions consisted mostly of lectures. This third edition will take a more hands-on approach, with many workshops taking place. The participants will not only watch or listen to lectures, but participate in a "sharing space" that will provide individual practice and experience. The goal of the selected workshops is to exchange resources, activities, and information among participants, so that after the conference, each participant should be able to implement his/her activities with the resources learned - in other words, the conference will train participants who will disseminate Universal Design Astronomy beyond the conference borders.
Go to the Proceedings of the 2010 Symposium / Proceedings of the 2013 Symposium (Japanese only)

In line with the underlying ideas of active learning, low cost, and resource sharing, the IAU Office of Astronomy Outreach (OAO), located at NAOJ Mitaka Campus, joined the project as co-host. Using the OAO international network, the educational materials introduced at the workshops will be disseminated to our neighboring countries. The international participants will work as "ambassadors." . Additionally, the resources and materials featured during the conference will be sent to the IAU Division C Commission C1 Working Group (WG) 3 “Astronomy for Equity and Inclusion” and shared on the website as teaching resources.
