What is the Brashear Astrograph
A Brashear astrograph is the old telescope, which has 20 cm diameter and 120.3 cm focal length, used to be in near the building of Institutes of Astronomy, School of Science, the University of Tokyo that is next to National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). When the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory was in Azabu, Niikura, only lens tube was bought from Brashear company, U.S.A. to observe the total solar eclipse happened in Hokkaido in August 1896.
The total solar eclipse was not observed because of the bad weather, but it was used for the observation of the solar eclipse in India in 1898 and succeeded to take pictures of corona. After that, it was used for the solar eclipse observation in off Sumatra in 1901. Later, an equatorial mounting made by Waner & Swazey Company U.S.A. was bought for the Brashear astrograph in 1902. Until then, it was installed on a 20 cm telescope made by TROHGHTON & SIMMS LONDON.
At that time, the Brashear astrograph was used for sky survey over the whole sky, likely around Milky Way Galaxy.
ブラッシャー天体写真儀について
ブラッシャー天体写真儀とは、国立天文台の敷地内で現在の東京大学天文学教育センターの建物付近にあった、口径20㎝、焦点距離120.3cmの望遠鏡である。
国立天文台の前身、東京天文台がまだ麻布飯倉にあった頃、1896年8月に北海道で起こった皆既日食を観測する目的で米国ブラッシャー社から購入された。
初期のころは他の望遠鏡に共架して使用されたが、1905年、専用の架台をワーナースワゼー社から購入した。これらの乾板はこの頃撮影されたものである。ブラッシャー望遠鏡はその後、1963年後継機の口径50㎝シュミット望遠鏡が導入されるまで使用されていた。
